Today I made Theo his Minecraft themed 8th birthday cake.  When I make cakes for children it starts off with me sketching the cake and what I am going for. I try to plan for lots of little bits on the cake and decorations and things to bring it to life. I start off with a cake and doom in my chest wondering if this will ever look ok. It builds up as we go getting better and better and usually by the end I stand back and cannot believe how well it turned out.  The one thing I like to ensure is that almost all of the cake is edible (candles obviously can’t be but almost everything else i like to be, especially for children’s cakes).  If you are talented at making things then make the characters etc but if you are not then don’t feel bad to buy them, eBay always has a great selection and really well made edible characters and props really will transform any homemade cake. Soft light brown sugar makes fantastic sand, broken up flakes is great dirt, mini twirls make good rocks or logs and coloured glitter makes fabulous lakes/water.
